Jim Sprankle

Ringed Neck Duck, drake

1984, 5.5” x 11.5” x 6”, wood

Jim Sprankle’s careers have ranged from professional baseball pitcher, banker, business owner and award-winning bird carver. When he moved to the Chesapeake Bay area in 1981, he decided to devote his life to his greatest passion, carving. He built his own aviary in front of his studio and collections different species of North American waterfowl. He is an accomplished three-time carver of the year, a judge for the Federal Duck Stamp Competition, author of four published books and carving teacher.

The ring-necked duck prefers small freshwater ponds or wooded lakes and swamps. The drake has a cinnamon ring at the base of the neck which gives the duck his name. Sprankle’s composition is unique as he portrays the drake with a lifted foot about to scratch its head. The captured moment lead Sprankle to win a Ward World Championship with this duck.
